Children and Education
If we've only spotted one thing over the years... it's that kids love re-enactments. They're usually the ones who shout the loudest when we're doing arms and combat displays, and who watch most intently when we're cooking over the open fire. They're also usually the first in the queue to try on the armour, and try out the weapons (under strict supervision, of course).
The children in the pictures below armed with sticks are taking part in one of our arena events - children's drill - a special participation event, where children get to charge at fully armoured knights.
Other pictures show our schools visits. If we have an encampment show, we can arrange an extra day (or days) where schools can visit us for an arranged selection of talks and demonstrations on assorted parts of medieval life.
We have in the past accommodated groups as small as half a dozen, and have done week-long events where we have seen 1000+ children.
As one child who appears in the official English Heritage video of Hastings 2006 put it, "you can answer your own questions, by seeing it for yourself".
NB - please forgive any slightly creepy airbrushed faces - we take child protection seriously, and don't use identifiable photos of kids who are not members.
